Two early TONY POLLOCK tries set Bannockburn on their way to a bonus point victory against a spirited Alloa 2nd XV at Bluebellwood Park.

The veteran forward struck twice in the opening minutes to give ‘Burn a lead which they never looked like losing. The win ensures the Beavers finished the first half of the league campaign unbeaten at home and will now contest promotion in a play-off league in the New Year.

Alloa’s 2nd XV had yet to record a league win this season but their youthful side battled hard and defended well as ‘Burn struggled to match the performance which saw them overcome unbeaten Blairgowrie the previous week.

The game had not yet settled into any kind of pattern when Pollock opened his account. Alloa were awarded a scrum near the right touchline, 10 metres from their own line. A rushed put-in reached Pollock on the blind-side flank and he showed pace and power to pick up and crash over despite the attention of several tacklers. Captain JOHN DAWSON struck a fantastic conversion from the touchline to add the extras.

Pollock’s second score also came from a scrum, albeit less directly. Number eight SANDY GRAINGER picked up from a ‘Burn feed and made good yards before popping a pass out the tackle to scrum half STUART McGOWN. He fed the ball out through the centres before Pollock, working hard to get up in support, collected a final pass on the right flank and charged over to make the score 12-0.

A Dawson penalty from straight in front of the posts stretched the lead to 15 but ‘Burn lost their way and Alloa worked their way back into the game, scoring a try through JAMES SHAW, converted by Lee Cairney, shortly before half-time.

The home side continued to dominate territory in the second half but couldn’t convert the pressure into the points until the mid-point of the half, when Dawson sprinted over under the posts after collecting an imaginative overhead pass from loose forward STUART HUGH. Dawson converted his own try to make the score 22-7 and bring ‘Burn within sight of a four-try bonus point.

The crucial fourth score came in the game’s closing minutes when full-back NICK WALES, who had impressed under the high ball and with the ball in hand throughout, finished well on the right flank after good handling in the backs.

Alloa had the last word with a well taken score under the posts by Mark Allan, which Cairney converted, but ‘Burn took the points and finished their round of regional league fixtures.

Full-back Wales was named man of the match for his impressive attacking display.

At present, Bannockburn top the table by one point from Blairgowrie, who have a game in hand. League activities take a break during Scotland’s Autumn International series.
