BANNOCKBURN BULLS (2xv) 10-5 PANMURE (2xv)
Bannockburn Bulls faced a young and determined Panmure 2xv at Bluebellwood on Saturday. With the Scottish winter finally arriving, the game was played in horrendous conditions with strong winds and sheet rain blowing down the pitch.
The Bulls elected to play with the wind in the first half, and it wasn't long until their larger pack was starting to dominate the loose. With the game being played exclusively in the Panmure half, Burn were fustrated at every turn by their opponents' dogged defence and their own handling errors.
The pressure eventually yielded a score, and following some concerted forward driving by the home forwards, Stevie McCormack squeezed over the line from a rolling maul. Veteran stand-off Stuart Shearlaw was unable to defeat the conditions with his conversion.
The remainder of the half followed the same pattern, with Burn coming close on several occasions. Right on the half time whistle, left winger Jamie Stewart bundled himself over the line for another uncoverted try.
If the Bulls had any doubt that a 10-0 half-time lead was going to be difficult to defend, within minutes of the second half starting, they found themselves deep in their own 22. The home defence couldn't hold out, and Panmure were quickly back within touching distance. The weather again put paid to any successful conversion attempt.
The game remained close until the finish, but neither team could put any more points on the scoreboard.
This was a well-deserved win for the Bulls who played with good spirit and a sense of adventure, but credit must go to both teams, and the referee Grahame Cairns, for managing to put on an entertaining game of rugby in truly attrocious conditions.
WELL DONE BOYS, GREAT RESULT.
